final iOS design

It felt like I was trying to fit too much on a single screen in my earlier designs, so I focused on just the starting town area, I've tried to have something interesting in each of the four corners.
The image is 4096 x 3072 which is 2 ipad screens wide and tall.

concept comparisons

Just some comparisons between some earlier concepts and the final result, as I mentionned before, I had to lengthen the bridge in order to make it a little bit more significant to the track. I'm quite pleased with how similar they look.

It's a bit difficult to make out the factory in the background from this point on the track but apart from that I think it looks ok.

progress so far

For the forested part of the level I mostly just need to fill it with more trees and finish off the fences.
I've just finished going back through and adding collision to all of my static meshes.

As for the town, I still need to sort out the texture for the main square and the part the tree is sitting on, and also add some more incidental stuff, as well as some detail on the surrounding area.

speed tree

Just trying to get used to using speed tree at the moment, all the branches on this tree are on sideways but apart from that I think it looks better than my first attempt.

fences

For this fence I started by making a piece that can slot into itself, I'll adjust it then to make a few variations which I can use. I'll have to go and get some textures and reference images of my own somewhere too.

tablet / mobile level

This is my initial design for the ipad game level

Layout

I drew a map that shows the layout of my race track, I might move the start and end positions to bring it in a bit and condense it all into a smaller space.

I tried putting a rough version together in trackmania, testing this track was taking me a little under 2 minutes which considering the speed of the cars, wasn't too bad. I'm aiming for about the 3 minute mark.
